France Bursary for Sterkspruit Youth

The Embassy of France is inviting applications from Sterkspruit youth who wish to pursue Master’s or Doctoral studies at higher education institutions in France through the France–South Africa Scholarship Programme.

This programme is also open to applicants from Lesotho and offers an opportunity to study abroad starting in September.

Due to differences between the Southern and Northern hemisphere academic calendars, selected students will begin with a preparatory track in South Africa, including online French language courses and possible internships with French companies.

Fields of Study

Applications are open to all fields of study. However, priority may be given to:

  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Technology
  • Niche programmes not available in South Africa

Candidate Requirements

  • Must be a South African or Basotho national
  • Born on or after 1 January 1992
  • Eligible for admission to a Master’s or PhD programme
  • Enrolled or accepted at a French higher education institution

Conditions for Master’s Applicants

  • Proof of acceptance into a study programme
  • Email exchanges with French institutions (recommended)
  • List of programmes applied for, including dates and fees

Conditions for PhD Applicants

  • Supervisor confirmation letter
  • Detailed research proposal (2–3 pages)
  • Plan for research periods in France
  • Cotutelle agreement (for co-supervision cases)

What the Bursary Covers

The programme offers two types of funding: full scholarships and cost-sharing scholarships.

Full scholarship includes:

  • Tuition fees (up to €5,000 per year)
  • Monthly allowance (€700 for Master’s, €1,400 for PhD)
  • Accommodation support
  • Return airfare ticket
  • Visa fee exemption
  • Health insurance

Additional funding opportunities may be required for some PhD programmes.
